JUGGLING!

This past Friday went out with a bang! Our circus artist, Kobi Shaw, treated our classroom to a fun afternoon of juggling.

Ms. Kobi started off by sharing the story of how she landed her first job juggling. It was quite entertaining to hear of her getting up in front of a crowd and dropping ball after ball after ball! She found that it took lots of practice and a “never give up” attitude to succeed.

She then gave us all the chance to practice a “never give up” attitude as we all learned to juggle! We began by throwing one scarf in the air and learning to catch the scarf in the air with our bear claws! She then challenged us to throw and catch two scarves in the air. It was a struggle for some students in the beginning. This led into a great discussion as they found that focus and listening were the keys to being successful.

The highlight of the day seemed to be seeing how far we could blow our scarves in the air! Ms. Kobi taught us how to place a scarf over our face and give it a blow! The scarves would shoot up and float down slowly. It was great fun challenging students to see who could get their scarf the highest! There were so many laughs, smiles, and positive comments made between everyone. It was a great way to end the week!

I can’t wait for our juggling adventures to continue next week with an added twist!  

BIRDS OF A FEATHER, FLOCK TOGETHER!

Today was an exciting day as we were able to have our first meeting with our circus artist, Ms. Kobi! The students were so excited to welcome her to our classroom and didn't waste any time bombarding her with questions! 

Ms. Kobi began by introducing herself and her art and then read the story Diary of a Circus Performer. I was surprised to see that quite a few students were up to date on circus terminology and were able to identify the Big Top and ringmaster.

My favorite part of the day was having everyone try feather balancing! This was a skill that took focus and perseverance. Everyone was able to practice balancing a peacock feather on the palm of their hand, back of their hand, end of their finger and even on the end of their nose! It was a hoot! I had a great time challenging students to see who could keep the feather on their nose the longest. I found that you win some, you lose some! 

I am so glad that we had such a positive first experience with Ms. Kobi! It brought such a sense of community into the classroom. It was incredible to hear students "filling buckets" for other students by giving praise, cheering and encouragement. The chatter after she left let me know that everyone is ready and wanting more :)

THE ADVENTURE BEGINS!

I am so excited to announce that this year the 2nd grade team at River Heights Elementary will be participating in Arts Integration Menomonie (A.I.M.). Over the course of the 2016-2017 school year, students in 2nd grade will have the opportunity to work with two different teaching artists. I am thrilled that the first artist we will have the joy of working with is Kobi Shaw! Kobi is best known for her role in the comedy juggling duo -In Capable Hands. Kobi has taught circus arts to children including clowning, magic, juggling, balancing, plate spinning and more. I personally had the opportunity to work with Kobi for a small part of the last school year and cannot wait to see the exciting ideas and talent she can bring to our classroom! Our team has already begun collaborating and brainstorming ways to integrate her art form. I believe a great adventure is beginning!
